A few months back, my brother and sister-in-law came to visit me here in Southeastern Colorado and we did the whole “tourist” thing in Mesa Verde and Four Corners. After visiting with us for a few days, and spending some time on the lake fishing in my boat, my sister-in-law turned to me and asked, “What is it with you fishermen and all of your flags?” Before I looked around my boat and the others in the slips next to mine, I was ready to say “What flags?” Then I looked up at all the international and nautical flags adorning the other boats, and I realized she was right. What is it about “us fishermen” and our flags?
Living in a land-locked state, I haven’t spent a whole lot of time on the Atlantic or Pacific Oceans, so I don’t know if it’s just fisherman, just Coloradoans, or if every boat owner loves flags. Maybe no one else knows where to find flags of the world for sale, or perhaps they haven’t figured out the International Code of Signals for mariners. But in all honestly, I doubt if many of my fellow fishermen know anything about the nautical flags they fly - even the flags that are designed to be flown during sailing emergencies.
When I first found a source that has flags of the world for sale, I didn’t hesitate to buy the flags from my ancestors’ country of origin. In addition to my favorite nautical flags, I proudly fly the flags of Ireland, France and Germany. Now, when I look around at neighboring boats at the lake house, I see that several other boat owners have caught on to this trend. In fact, if you look at the marina, you might think we were hosting our own miniature United Nations.
One word of caution for those of you who are looking at flags of the world for sale - remember never to fly a flag from another country above the flag of the United States. This is specifically mentioned in the United States flag code, and while not officially a law, there are people who are very conscious of these rules.
